Are you looking for a simple and fun escape from Montreal, perfect for the whole family? Well, you’re in luck! Jay Peak Resort, located in the state of Vermont (USA), is less than a 2-hour drive away from the city and offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, a cozy resort, and activities that kids will absolutely love. My friend and I recently took the kids to this charming destination during the long weekend in August, and I can tell you firsthand that the kids had an absolute blast!
When we first arrived at Jay Peak Resort, we were excited to check in at the Stateside Hotel & Base Lodge. It’s conveniently located near the Clip & Reels Recreation Center. At first, we were a bit surprised to see only about four cars parked in the area, and we began to wonder if we had taken a wrong turn. It seemed like an unusually low number of cars for a popular resort like Jay Peak. But as we soon discovered, the reason for the limited parking near the Stateside Hotel was that most visitors either preferred to stay closer to the hotel beside the waterpark or opted to rent a cottage for their stay. It turned out that the primary attraction, the Pump House Waterpark, had its own accommodations nearby such as Tram Haus Lodge, Tramside Base Lodge, Hotel Jay and Austria Haus.
For us to reach the Pump House (the renowned waterpark), we had two options: either hop on the complimentary shuttle provided by the resort or use our own car. The shuttle was a convenient choice, especially if you wanted to leave your vehicle behind and enjoy a stress-free ride to the waterpark. Alternatively, if you preferred the flexibility of having your car, that was an option too. We decided to take our car since we didn’t want to wait for the shuttle. This choice allowed us to have more control over our schedule and made it easier to carry any extra gear or supplies we needed for our day at the Pump House.
Fun Activities We Enjoyed with the Kids at Jay Peak Resort
1. Water Park – Splash into Fun!
One of our absolute highlights of Jay Peak Resort is this incredible indoor water park known as the Pump House Waterpark. It’s like a water wonderland for all ages! There are water slides, a lazy river, and a fun splash area designed just for the little ones. It’s the perfect spot to chill out and have an amazing time with your kids.
If you’re wondering about the pricing, we were lucky to get a deal for just $119 CAD, which covered admission for 2 adults and 2 kids. We found this great deal on Tuango.ca, a popular Canadian deal site. Without this deal, the regular price at the door for us would have been $160 USD.
2. Family Arcade – Fun games for all ages!
Right next to the water park, you’ll find the arcade, a place filled with fun games for the kids. It’s important to know that it’s easy to spend a lot of time and money here because the games can be quite tempting. During our visit, my daughter was really into playing arcade games with the hopes of winning the biggest prize – a giant plush giraffe priced at 10,000 points. We managed to keep our spending at around $20 and won approximately 400 points. While we didn’t quite reach the giraffe, my daughter was still happy with the cute gifts she exchanged her points for.
3. Tram Ride – Soak in Stunning Views!
Don’t miss the chance to take a tram ride to the summit of Jay Peak. The view from the top is breathtaking, and it’s an easy adventure that the whole family can enjoy. It’s your ticket to experiencing the natural beauty of the Green Mountains. When we reached the summit, it was a bit different from what we expected. While it was 23 degrees at the bottom of the mountain, up there it was cloudy and somewhat chilly.
To ensure everyone stays cozy, especially the little ones, I’d highly recommend bringing along a jacket or some warm layers. Despite the weather change, the view was still breathtaking and definitely worth the tram ride! If you’re wondering about the cost, we paid a family pack price of $90 USD for 2 adults and 2 kids.
4. Clip & Reels Recreation Center – Indoor Excitement!
If you’re looking for some indoor entertainment, the Clip & Reels Recreation Center can be another option. It’s a cozy spot that offers a range of activities great for family. Inside, there’s a small movie area, and the best part is that the movies are complimentary with your stay, making it a great bonus for families. For those seeking active fun, there’s a climbing wall called Clip N Climb, which costs $20 per person. It’s a fantastic way for kids to burn off some energy while having fun.

When it comes to dining at Jay Peak Resort, there are several options to choose from, ensuring that everyone in your family finds something they love.
1. Provisions General Store: For those looking for quick bites, snacks, or groceries to enjoy in your cozy accommodation, the Provisions General Store is your go-to spot. It’s a convenient store to stock up on essentials and grab a snack on the go. While the prices here might seem a bit higher to some people, it’s a great option if you plan ahead by getting your groceries before you come. This way, you can save some money and still enjoy the convenience of picking up a snack when you’re in a hurry. However, it’s important to note that when traveling with food from Canada to the USA, there are certain restrictions and regulations in place. Certain items may be subject to inspection or may not be allowed. Be sure to check and comply with customs and border protection guidelines to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.
2. Clubhouse Grille: If you’re craving a hearty meal with a side of beautiful golf and mountain views, the Clubhouse Grille is a must-visit, just located at the Tramside Base. It offers a menu of delicious dishes, making it a great choice for a satisfying lunch or dinner.
3. The Foundry Pub & Grille: Located on the 2nd floor of Hotel Jay, Tramside, this dining spot offers a diverse menu that caters to a wide range of tastes. 4. The Warming Shelter Snack Bar: The Warming Shelter is your go-to spot for a variety of delicious treats, including sandwiches, chicken fingers with fries, pizza, ice cream, and soft drinks. It’s all designed to keep your hunger at bay while you enjoy your time at the waterpark. You can find this snack bar on the lower level of the Indoor Waterpark, right along the Big River and conveniently close to the Elevation 1851′ Family Arcade. As you can see, we had lunch at The Warming Shelter Snack Bar. It was the closest restaurant to the waterpark, and although it may not be the healthiest choice, but once in a while, it’s perfectly okay to treat yourself and enjoy these delicious bites while having a great time with the family.
5. Mountain Dick’s Pizza: If you’re in the mood for pizza, Mountain Dick’s Pizza is the go-to place. They serve up delicious pies with a variety of toppings, perfect for a family pizza night. It’s located inside Hotel Jay, to the right as you walk past the Family Room in the lobby area. Mountain Dick’s Pizza was our favorite pick because the kids are big pizza fans. The pizza was delicious, and with all the different toppings available, each of us could make our slice exactly how we wanted it.
6. Alice’s Table: Alice’s Table takes its name from the legendary Alice Lewis, who dedicated her hospitality skills to Jay Peak from 1956 to 1968. While it might have a slightly fancier touch, much like the woman it’s named after, Alice’s Table is every bit as warm and inviting. This particular Jay Peak restaurant is ideal for families looking to celebrate special occasions. You’ll find Alice’s Table conveniently located in the Tram Haus Lodge, just across from the Tower Bar. So, if you’re seeking a welcoming dining experience with a touch of history, Alice’s Table is the place to be!
A Day Trip to Willoughby Lake
On our last day at Jay Peak, we decided to venture a bit further and explore Willoughby Lake, which is just a 45-minute drive from Jay Peak Resort and approximately 2 hours from Montreal. We had heard mixed reviews about the area, so we decided to check it out ourselves and share our honest thoughts about this popular destination. Upon arriving, we discovered that the lake is divided into two distinct sides. One side is more suited for paddleboarding and kayaking, while the other side is perfect for families seeking a more traditional lake experience.
Paddleboarding and Kayaking (South Beach Side)
This side of the lake that’s great for paddleboarding and kayaking might not be the best choice for families with young kids. It can get a little windy and chilly there, which might not be the most comfortable condition for little ones. However, the stunning view totally makes up for it, so if you’re excited about paddleboarding or kayaking, this side is perfect for you. Just remember, there are some rocks in the water on this side, so it’s a good idea to bring water shoes to keep your feet safe while you enjoy your water adventure.
Family-Friendly Sandy Beach (North Beach Side)
On the other side of the lake, we found a more family-friendly environment. The sandy beach is a perfect spot for kids to build sandcastles, swim, and enjoy the sunshine. The water is shallow and calm, making it an ideal location for families with young children. Just note that the beach is usually more crowded during the peak season, so be sure to arrive early if you want to snag a good spot.
Renting Paddleboards and Kayaks
If you’re interested in renting paddleboards or kayaks to explore the beauty of Willoughby Lake, you can typically find rental options on both sides of the lake. Rental shops and facilities around the lake offer these watercraft, allowing visitors to easily enjoy these exciting activities.
Our time in Vermont was an amazing mix of excitement, relaxation, and quality family time. If you’re looking for a convenient getaway not to far from Montreal, Jay Peak Resort should absolutely be at the top of your list. With its fun water park, a wide range of kids activities, and nearby lake adventures, this destination provides an unforgettable experience for families. We highly recommend this place and will definitely be coming back here again!
