In order to live a happy life, you must love yourself. This is because the only way to be truly happy and at peace with the world is to love oneself. Similarly, you can’t truly love someone else unless you accept yourself first.

” You can’t let someone else lower your self-esteem, because that’s what it is – self-esteem. You need to first love yourself before you have anybody else love you.” – Winnie Harlow

With that in mind, how can you tell if you truly love yourself?

Here are some simple tips:

1. The image you see in the mirror fascinates you.

To appreciate your appearance, you don’t need to have the most gorgeous or handsome face on the planet. You don’t need the figure of a supermodel to think you’re attractive. We can’t all get lucky and win the genetic lottery. Even those who appear to be “perfect” have insecurities, according to the facts.

We assume that making ourselves appear ideal is the only way to enjoy what we see in the mirror. But it’s never going to stop if we’re continually comparing ourselves to others and identifying flaws even when there aren’t any, is it? You’ll never be satisfied with who you are or how you look. There will never be a run out of things to criticize.

Sure, cosmetic science has advanced to the point where you can now acquire your ideal physical appearance, but at what cost? Expect to pay a lot of money because cosmetic surgeons don’t work for free. Unfortunately, not everyone has that kind of money on hand, leaving them with little alternative so they avoid looking in the mirror completely. Is it, however, absolutely necessary? The good news is that you are not required to do so.

All you have to do now is accept yourself as you are, including your physical appearance. It’s the face you were born with, whether you like it or not. Learn to see beyond the obvious. You’ll soon feel at ease in your own skin, and your best friend will be the one you see in the mirror.

2. You put yourself first over everyone else.

Prioritizing oneself over others is not a sign of selfishness; rather, it indicates that you value yourself above others. It’s a different storey if you take it to the extreme, i.e., if you step over people to acquire what you want. It’s fine if you’re not hurting anyone, though.

The problem is that most individuals are terrified of hurting others’ sentiments. They comply with their parents’ wishes as well as their spouse’s requests. Even if they realize what they’re being asked to do goes against their ideals, they quickly succumb to peer pressure.

It’s acceptable to give in to those you care about and love once in a while, but don’t do it on a regular basis. Your ‘friends’ may simply abuse your trust. If you don’t learn to stand up for yourself and fight for what you believe in, they may easily persuade you to do their bidding.

It is not a sign of selflessness to let others walk all over you. For lack of a better word, it’s a symptom of ignorance. You are a live, breathing human. You have your own ambitions, desires, and goals in life. If you aren’t happy, don’t waste your time trying to make others happy. If you want to devote your life to making others happy, you must first be able to unconditionally love yourself.

3. You take care of your body and health.

Nothing says self-loathing louder than letting your health go to waste. Your body is your temple, as the ancient quote says. You’re not taking care of your temple if you’re not taking care of your body.

You don’t need to sign up for a gym membership right now. You also don’t have to buy only organic foods from now on. Paying attention to your body and its requirements is all it takes to take care of your health. Make it a habit to eat healthy foods and avoid junk food as much as possible. Stop doing anything that will degenerate your body. Things like smoking, drinking, and using drugs are not cool. Sure, these will make you joyful for a short time, but you will certainly suffer in the long term.

Learn to recognise and respond to your body’s cues. Take a snooze when you’re anxious and fatigued. Taking a day off is a good idea. Take a weekend getaway. It’s also possible that you’ll want to spend the entire day doing nothing. If you binge watching Netflix every day, it’s not healthy. It shouldn’t be an issue if you only do it once a week or once a month, especially if it helps you forget about stressful things like work.

Allow yourself to take a rest. As the quote says “all work and no play makes Jack a boring boy”. You not only get to have fun, but you also give your body a well-deserved break from your daily routine.
